What to wear for horse riding: Tips for beginners

If you are new to horse riding, understanding what to wear is crucial for both safety and comfort. Although it may seem like a huge sum of money to pay out initially, it will be worth it in the long term to prevent possible injury.

Here is all you need to know about what you should wear for horse riding lessons if you are a beginner:

Riding Hat
Safety has got tighter over the years and with very good reasons. Hats provide good protection in the event of a fall and is the only thing that can stand in the way of you and a serious head injury. Riding hats are by far the most important accessory when getting kitted out for horse-riding and the one thing that you must wear. Ensure that you buy a hat that carries the correct standard for your needs. If you are using a Riding School it is advisable to check with them if they have any stipulations on hat standards when booking your lesson and before you purchase your own hat.

Gloves
Gloves are a key piece of riding wear to prevent your fingers slipping on the reins, passing through your fingers or friction burns to the hands. It is difficult to grip the reins properly if your hands are cold, so in the winter gloves are a must have. They come in a variety of styles and materials and can be as cheap or as expensive as you wish. Choose a pair of gloves that have grip and inner finger panels for reinforcement where the reins will sit in your hands as these will be more comfortable to wear and will help prevent the reins slipping through your fingers.

Jodhpurs and breeches
Unlike normal trousers such as jeans; jodhpurs stretch, making it much easier to move when riding your horse. They are also extremely hard wearing so you won't need to keep replacing them. Riding your horse can rub away at the material of ordinary trousers, which can again cause friction burns. In comparison, jodhpurs and breeches have knee patches and are seamed on the outside of the leg to avoid rubbing. There is a wide selection to choose from, from the more basic pair with the simple knee patch to full seat versions. Choose ones that you feel comfortable in and that are suited to your needs.

Riding boots
Riding boots are the safest footwear to use whilst riding and are available in various styles, from the more traditional long boot to short boots known as jodhpur boots, these can be worn with chaps or gaiters to give the look of a tall boot whilst riding. Whatever style of boot you choose it should have a heel of around 1” to 11/2” to avoid your foot slipping through the stirrup and getting caught causing injury.
